Flagg Wilson “Bud” Falor Flagg, of Millwood, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, aboard American Airlines Flight 77, which was hijacked and flown into the Pentagon in a terrorist attack. Mr. Flagg was born Oct. 25, 1938, in California, the son of Dilbert Falor and Elizabeth White Flagg. He and his wife owned and operated Daybreak Farm in Millwood. He was a 1956 graduate of Corona High School, Corona, Calif., and a 1961 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and Pensacola Flight School. He became a Navy pilot in 1962, flying the F-8 Crusader jet aircraft. After three tours of duty in Southeast Asia, he left active duty in 1967 and joined American Airlines and the Naval Reserves F-8 Squadron, VF-201. He was commanding officer of Naval Reserve F-8 squadrons VFP 206 and VFP 6366, commander of Naval Reserve Readiness Command Region Two, and assistant chief of Naval Operations Air Warfare. He was designated rear admiral in 1987 and retired in 1995. He retired in 1998 from American Airlines as a captain, flying the Boeing 767 on international flights. He was a member of the Blue Ridge Hunt Club and an active member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church of Winchester. He married Darlene Ellen “Dee” Embree in 1961. Mrs. Flagg also died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, aboard American Airlines Flight 77. Surviving are two sons, Marc Flagg of Texas and Michael Flagg of Clarke County; a sister, Patricia Sellek of Las Vegas; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Winchester, with Pastor Jeffrey D. May and Pastor James H. Utt officiating. An interment service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis. Memorials may be made to the National Naval Aviation Museum Foundation, 1750 Radford Blvd., Suite B, NAS Pensacola, Fla. 32508; to Tailhook Education Foundation, 9696 Businesspark Ave., San Diego, Calif. 92131; to Historic Longbranch, P.O. Box 241, Millwood, 22646; or to the Thanksgiving Memorial Fund, c/o Grace Lutheran Church, 26 Boscawen St., Winchester 22601. (Witness) History | circa 13 September 2001 | Retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Wilson “Bud” Falor Flagg was on American Airlines Flight 77 on Sept. 11 with his wife Darlene Ellen "Dee" Embree Flagg. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he went on to flight training and was designated a Naval aviator. He was deployed three times to Southwest Asia on the USS Oriskany, two of them combat cruises. He left active duty in 1967 and joined American Airlines and the Naval Reserve. As a Naval Reserve officer, he commanded two F-8 squadrons and two augment units, U.S. Naval Air Forces Eastern Atlantic and Reserve Readiness Command Region Two. He served in the Pentagon as special assistant to the deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for reserve affairs and as assistant chief of Naval operations for air warfare. He also served as assistant chief of staff, readiness and training, on the staff of commander Naval Air Forces U.S. Atlantic Fleet, and as deputy for reserve affairs on the staff of commander in chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. He was promoted to rear admiral in 1986 and retired in 1995 with two stars. He retired in 1998 from American Airlines as a captain, flying international flights. He was a member of the Blue Ridge Hunt Club and a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winchester, VA. Survivors include two sons, Marc and Michael, and a sister.
